Teaching Lessons for Life
As a Quaker school, we believe that there is “that of God” in everyone. As such, all members
of our school community are treated with love, dignity and respect.
Each week, students gather for Meeting for Worship, in which children worship in silence.
Participants
may share thoughts or messages on which the community can reflect.
Community Service
Our curriculum includes a class in Quaker Studies which emphasizes the testimonies of simplicity, peace,
integrity, community and equality. These values are put into action through a variety of local, regional,
national and international service projects. Some recent projects have included UNICEF, Heifer International,
and holiday food and toy drives.
Quaker Values Committee
How can creative conflict resolution permeate all aspects of our school’s culture? Which service projects
will engage our students and strengthen our community? How can we honor values like equality, simplicity and
environmental stewardship during special events and celebrations? To find answers to these questions and more,
Friends Academy teachers and administrative staff work together on our Quaker Values Committee. The committee
has led several projects, including a “Breakfast Club” for Middle School students where they have
a forum to talk about issues that concern them, in a casual atmosphere over breakfast. This committee also
plans the annual Quaker Day which seeks to bring the school community together for a common cause. Past themes
have involved caring for the environment, formal debates on current topics, and building our new Peace Park.
If you have an interesting community service project for the Committee to consider, or would like more
information, please contact Michelle Maikis, Clerk of the Quaker Values Committee and 4th grade teacher,
at michellem@friendsacademy.net.
