3rd Grade - Happy February!

Dear Parents,

We have had an excellent start to 2012. Students made resolutions that they are sure to keep! It seems hard to believe we are half way through third grade! Our time together so far has been very productive. I am very impressed with the student's progress!

This month in math we will be having a blast in the wonderful world of multiplication. We will play games and quiz each other with flash cards until we have the facts memorized. Starting off on the right foot is very important. Students can visit Multiplication.com to play games and practice at home.

In reading, we will begin the "Good Neighbors" theme. We will explore genres including Historical Fiction, Expository Nonfiction, and Informational Fiction. We will determine the difference between fact and opinion and begin our first mini research project. In Science, we are studying the Solar System. We will explore why the moon seems to change shape. We will also be able to describe the inner and outer planets. Our study of local owls, their nests and pellets will continue in environmental stewardship program.

In social studies, we are studying the national and state government. We will continue practicing our map skills and discuss laws and rules in the community. In honor of Black History Month we will be working on Biography book reports. Please stay tuned for directions.

We have a very exciting month ahead of us. Interim reports will be issued the week of February 6. On Tuesday, February 14th, we invite all Lower School grandparents to visit the school. The students have prepared a wonderful performance that I'm sure they will enjoy. We will also have an event with the 4th grade to celebrate Valentine's Day. Students are welcome to share valentine's cards as long as they have one for each student in the class. On February 15th we will take a trip to the Kimmel Center to view a show, "Black Journey". When we return to school, we will participate in "Hoops for Heart". This is a fundraiser for the American Heart Association that is run by Coach Kelly. Please look for information in your student's folder for more information on this event. February 16th, at 8:30, we invite parents to coffee and tea with Rose. Please feel free to join them with any questions, concerns or ideas you may have regarding FAW. Lastly, school will be closed Friday, February 17th and Monday, February 20th for winter recess.

In Friendship,
Teacher Devon
