Spanish - In the early part of February, the sixth graders will be reviewing for their mid-term exam. In the second week they will begin Lesson 19 in their books. This lesson will introduce vocabulary associated with diversions/entertainment. In grammar, the students will focus on working with the irregular verb "ir".

Language Arts - This month the students will be writing a "compare and contrast" essay. The sixth graders will have a strong introduction that grabs the reader's attention, vivid details to support their topic sentences, and a conclusion that restates their main points. Once the final product is completed, the students will share their essays with the class, using strong public speaking skills. In addition to this essay, the children will read various short stories and poems analyzing the authors' use of character and setting.

Math - In February, students will build on and extend their knowledge of customary measurement to work with metric measures. Students will also draw upon their understanding of geometric concepts to find perimeter, area, and volume. Lastly, students will examine estimating the area of irregular shapes and complex figures, along with three dimensional objects.

World History - In February, the 6th Grade will complete their study of Ancient Greece, the crucible of western civilization and democracy, and then shift their focus to the rise of the Roman Empire. Topics will include the founding of the Roman Republic, the rise of Julius Caesar and the beginning of the Roman Empire; key Roman technological inventions and innovations; deeds and misdeeds committed by various Emperors; Roman culture; the rise of Christianity; and the eventual over-expansion and fall of Rome.

Science - This month, the 6th Grade will continue studying body systems and functions. Chapters 7 and 8 will be combined. Chapter 7 topics will include classes of nutrients such as proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals, mechanical and chemical processes of the Digestive System, and digestive organ functions. Chapter 8 will explore the Circulatory System and topics such as the heart, arteries, veins, blood and blood pressure.
