7th Grade
March 2010

Dear Parents,

Here is what you can expect this month in 7th grade:

Pre-Algebra - In March, students will begin learning to find slope and use the slope intercept formula. In addition, students will explore collinear points and the distance formula. Finally, students will be introduced to complex fractions and using LCD sets to simplify algebraic equations.

7th Math – This month students will begin by reviewing procedures and applications of scientific notation. Students will then learn to multiply and divide powers with the same base, and use power rules to raise a product to a power. Finally, the class will begin to compare pairs of angles and congruent polygons.

Science - Students will complete a project which requires them to design and present a proposal for a wild animal habitat suitable for a zoo, aquarium or animal park. The class will then begin to study the respiratory and excretory systems of animals. Students will compare the air pathways and explain oxygen exchange in lungs and tissues of various phyla. Students will then learn about the excretory and urinary systems different in animals, and distinguish between the functions of each.

English - In March, students will finish reading A Raisin in the Sun and film and edit the screenplays they drafted in groups. We will begin a new unit on writing persuasively; they’ll become familiar with writing for target audiences, persuasive techniques, and structurally sound methods for designing a rationale to support an opinion. Students will design an advertisement for a product they will have invented and will draft a persuasive opinion paper on a controversial current events topic of their choice. They’ll also begin reading Fahrenheit 451, working with modifiers, and using new vocabulary words.

Geography – 7th grade students will wrap up their study of Africa. After achieving an understanding of humanitarian challenges facing various African nations, they’ll draft letters to local and state representatives calling for action. The next unit will cover physical and cultural geographic features of South and Central America.

Spanish - Students will learn how to tell time, say where you are going and request a snack food. In grammar, students will learn how to conjugate and properly use the verb ir (to go). In addition, they will use the verb “estar” (to be) and learn how to use interrogative words correctly.

Have a Great Month!
