June In Second Grade

As we finish the year, we are STILL working! Much of our work is review. We have covered a lot of material this year! We are integrating several skills in reading and writing projects. We are challenging ourselves with Math word problems and more complex assignments. We are learning the basics of multiplication! In Science we are ending the year learning about different types of birds. Have you heard about our red-winged blackbird who visits us every day and eats all of our bird food? T. Laura is worried about how he’ll eat over the summer without us here!

Over the summer, please have fun keeping your child’s skills sharp. If you do so on a regular basis, your child’s transition into third grade will be much more successful.

MATH
PRACTICE ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION FACTS THROUGH 18 ALL SUMMER. Your child should be able complete a minimum of 80 problems accurately in 5 minutes before he enters third grade. Work orally and with written problems. Integrate Math in daily life. Ask your child questions about TIME, MONEY, MEASUREMENT, ESTIMATION, AND MAKE UP WORD PROBLEMS USING ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION. We use Math constantly. Your child can, too.

LANGUAGE ARTS
READ READ READ!!
There are MANY books that are fun and informative to read. To determine whether or not a book is on your child’s reading level see if he/she is able to read all but 5 words on a sample page. Look online. Amazon.com, the Barnes and Noble website, and many others will pull up huge lists in all areas from humor to biography, including sample pages to read. Just type in your child’s age/grade. Many used books are available through Amazon at a very reasonable price.

Read chapter books with your child. This will provide you and your child with memories to last a lifetime. Discuss plot, characters, vocabulary, inferences, and basic comprehension. Mostly, enjoy the book!

WRITE thank you letters, emails - with your supervision, journals, or a vacation log. Use the English book that comes home for structured writing activities. There are several sections completely devoted to practicing different kinds of writing.

RESOURCES
Summer Bridge Activities , available at amazon.com for about $9, is a good workbook with educational activities in Math and Reading. There are many other similar books at bookstores and online.

Workbooks from 2nd grade have pages not completed in class and reflect the level of mastery which is expected in 2nd grade.

A book list with suggested reading materials will be sent home with your child.

We have enjoyed sharing this year with your children. We look forward to seeing them in the fall and hearing all about their wonderful summer vacations.

Thank you for your support this year,

Teacher Robin and Teacher Laura
