June
Dear Parents,
It doesn´t seem possible, but the year is done! It has been a terrific year with so many accomplishments and wonderful memories. This time of year always leaves us with such mixed feelings. We are not quite ready to pass the children on to second grade and will miss them so much. However, we are amazed at how far everyone has come and how ready they are for the new challenges that lie ahead.
To keep these future second graders ready for the challenges of next year, I am including several suggestions for the summer.
Math - Try to incorporate math into fun activities such as figuring
out the number of miles to a destination, calculating
simple money sums in the grocery store, and telling time at
various times of the day. Keep practicing addition and
subtraction facts to 20. By the end of summer the children
should be able to do 100 addition problems in 5 minutes,
and 100 subtraction problems, also in 5 minutes, without stress.
Reading – Naturally I want to see the children continue to
read and improve their vocabulary and comprehension
skills. But, most of all, I would like to see them read
because it´s fun and they enjoy it. I have a list of chapter books and other books suitable for these children available to you. Please continue to read with them and to them and, most importantly, talk to them about what they have read. Not only will this prepare them for next year, but it will continue to foster their love for reading.
Writing – Have the children keep a journal of interesting things that they do during the long summer. Encourage them to write stories and poetry and summarize favorite books that they read.
