Dear Friends,

As we continue to thaw out from ferocious February, let’s all hope March comes and goes like a lamb. 8th Grade fundraising efforts will continue and the cost of the trip will continue to be adjusted.

Algebra I: In March, students will begin learning to solve systems of linear equations. In addition, they will use the various operations to solve the systems of linear equations. The class will use these systems to solve puzzle problems involving digits, age, and symbols. Finally, students will begin to explore inequalities.

Science: In March, students will begin to explore Energy and Energy Resources. Lab work will include analyzing energy transformations and bringing energy power to life. Each student will present a report at the end of the third marking period on biomass energy and hydrogen fuel cells.

Pre-Algebra: In March, students will begin learning to find slope and use the slope-intercept formula. In addition, students will explore collinear points and the distance formula. Finally, students will be introduced to complex fractions.

US History II: During March, the 8th Grade will contemplate the complex conditions and root causes that led to World War I. Students will evaluate America’s evolving role in the world community and make judgments regarding our current position as the global hegemony and our inherent responsibility to dictate international relations. Students will complete a 5 paragraph essay on the root causes of WWI, and will weigh the pros and cons of international governing bodies such as the League of Nations and the United Nations. At the end of March, the topic will shift to the “Roaring 1920’s.”

English: This month the 8th graders will read To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. They will study the time period of the novel in order to get a better understanding of the story. Students will be expected to discuss the themes of the book and be able to write a character analysis essay. In addition, symbolism will be discussed in detail. In grammar, the 8th graders will study adjectives and adverbs.

Spanish: During the month of March the 8th grade will begin Unit 4, Chapter 2, in which they will learn the language associated with making purchases and bargaining. In grammar, the students will learn to properly conjugate stem-changing verbs and use them in sentences. In addition, they will be introduced to the appropriate use of indirect pronouns.
