Life in Our Middle School
Fifth through Eighth Grades
For Friends Academy students, the Middle School experience begins in 5th grade. During this time of
important social, intellectual and physical changes, the Middle School program is designed to empower
students with sound decision-making skills and a love of learning. Small class size enables the faculty
to closely monitor the academic and social progress of each student.
English Program
Using a literature-based approach, our English program exposes students to a broad range of genres.
Grammar and vocabulary are taught as integral parts of the study of English. A wide range of writing
opportunities encourages the development of sound writing skills in all subject areas.
Mathematics Program
Middle School mathematics stresses strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills. Our mathematics
program is designed to prepare our students for the study of Pre-Algebra in 7th grade and Algebra I in 8th grade.
Science Program
Middle Schoolers are provided with many opportunities for practical application of their math skills throughout
our Science program, both in and out of the lab. Our primary focus includes a survey of the three main branches
of Physical, Chemical and Life Science in 5th grade, and moves to more specific studies of each area in 6th, 7th,
and 8th grades. Students also benefit from collaborative and group learning experiences.
Social Studies Program
Our students explore United States History, World History and Geography. In all grades, students are challenged
to consider parallels between current world events and history, and the impact of geography and natural resources
on world culture.
Our Middle School day is rounded out with classes in art, physical education, health, music, computer lab, Quaker
studies and foreign language. We also offer a variety of after-school activities that include: Middle School
dances, Movie Nights, Breakfast Club, Literary Club & Magazine, Poetry, Drama, Sports and Science Clubs.
